Lake Crichton Pro Am 2008

Lake Crichton, Dunsandel, NZ hosted some of the worlds best skiers for the Pro Am tournament on 28 February to 2 March. The international pros were joined by the best that New Zealand and Canterbury have to offer.
There was plenty to please the enthusiasts with seven of the worlds top jumpers here along with top class slalomers and trickers.
Thomas Degasperi broke the NZ all-comers slalom record with a run of 3 balls on the 10.25 metre line. The previous best was set by Andy Mapple in 2004 and equalled by Chris Parrish in 2005.
Jaret Llewellyn joined the fray setting a new record NZ all-comers jump record of 70.3 metres. The record was previously set at 68.9 metres by Scot Ellis at Lake Crichton in 2004.
The weather forecasts threatened to cause disruption, but at least it held off until Sunday afternoon. When the southerly gales hit it was with a vengeance bringing heavy rain showers and plumetting temperatures. This forced the cancellation of the jump head to head and some display events but it could have been far worse.

A favourite with the Canterbury crowd Aaron Larkin was an impressive sight on the water. Aaron skied into fourth equal place with fellow kiwi Steve Cockeram in the slalom final scoring 3 buoys on the 10.75 metre line.

One of the stars of the tournament didn't even ski. Eight month old Jaeden Eade, son of Kyle and Karyn Eade was a popular figure at the Pro Am.

Lake Crichton owner/operator Chris Wright presents Thomas Degasperi with a $1,000 after his record breaking run of 3 balls @ 10.25 during the second round of slalom on Saturday.

The official Pro Am boat was supplied by event sponsors, Crichton Marine running both Perfect Pass and Zero Off speed control systems. The 2008 Ski Nautique 196 is seen here driven by Chris Wright and towing Felipe Miranda (Chile).

Francisco Miranda's run comes to an end when he gets crossed up around 2 ball during the second slalom round on Saturday afternoon. The pic to the right shows the result as Franciisco hits the water.

While others were getting stressed about the jump seedings prior to Saturday's round Ryan Fitts relaxes with a book in the competitors area. Fittsy took second place in the final with a distance of 68 metres.

Kyle Eade had a couple of instances losing the handle during the second trick round (above) and during the slalom head to head (right) on Sunday.

The handle gets away on Kyle Eade during Sunday's slalom head to head. Kyle was seventh in the slalom final with 2 balls on the 10.75, eighth in the tricks with a best score of 5580 points and nineth in the jump final with 61.4 metres.

Trick judging was carried out by video link from the boat to the officials room in the clubhouse. The officials here are from left, Steve Cockeram, Alison Eade and Mark Evans.

Rodrigo Miranda (Chile) was tenth in the trick section with a best score of 3510 points. Rodrigo also jumped 63.3 metres in the final to take eight place.
