Tekapo
Slalom & Reunion - 15/16 March 2008
The
Lake Tekapo Power Boat and Water Ski Club celebrated its 45th
Anniversary over the weekend of the 15th and 16th March with a
tournament and reunion.
The plan was to hold the annual Tekapo Slalom Tournament on Saturday
with a reunion dinner on Saturday evening and club activities
on the Sunday. Persistant north-east winds on Saturday forced
a number of adjournments of the tournament with the first round
not being completed until after 6pm. Luckily the flexibility of
the club's program allowed for the second and third rounds to
be held in mainly excellent conditions on Sunday morning.
A star studded line-up of 23 skiers took
part in the slalom and the competition was hot at the pointy end
with a number of Canterbury's short line seniors in the field.
In the end it was Craig Rogers who took the top slot recording
a best pass of 5 buoys on the 12 metre line at 58kph. Second equal
were Chris Brown and Andrew James while tournament organiser Gavin
Green was forth. Bryan Murray took out the handicap honours with
Tom Green second and Faye Sedgley third.
The reunion part of the weekend was also a huge success with about
90 attending the dinner and dance at the Tekapo Community Hall.
A lot of time and effort was put into displays of photos and material
from the club's formative years at the Clubrooms. The local Lions
Club provided the evening dinner and this was complimented with
a number of interesting speakers who had great stories of their
experiences in the club and boating at Tekapo in the early years.
skishotz congratulates the Lake Tekapo team for the effort they
put into the weekend and the enjoyable time we all had.

It
was fantastic to see the masters of our sport putting in an appearance
at Tekapo. Craig Rogers didn't disappoint and was in his usual fine
form taking the top spot and the $150 cash prize. Craig's best pass
was 5 buoys on the 12 metre line at 58kph. |

Tournament
organiser and Chief Judge, Gavin Green deals with a touch of sun
strike around 5 ball during the second round early on Sunday morning.
As well as organising and competing in the event Gavin had the
added stress of making difficult calls on the tournament progress
during difficult lake conditions on the Saturday. Gavin was placed
forth in the top series and his best pass was 3 buoys at 55 kph
on the 12 metre line.

Adding
an international flavour to the event was US skier, Cole Maurer.
Cole was a spectacular performer as he battled to come to grips
with Tekapo's slow water. Cole's best pass was 4 buoys at 55kph
on the 13 metre. |

Cole
also thrilled the spectators on Sunday with a bare foot display.
He is seen here in his second pass performing a back spin.

preparing for her first round on Saturday. Lake conditions at this
point were starting to deteriorate forcing a number of adjournments
during the day. |

One
of NZ's slalom gladiators, Andrew James, recorded a best of pass
of 5 buoys at 55kph on the 12 metre rope. While travel committments
for the Nationals at Piarere prevented many skiers from appearing
at Tekapo, Andrew was able to take in both events. He was placed
second equal overall with Chris Brown.

Keith
Summerill is normally seen in a judging roll at tournaments but
at Tekapo he decided to try the competition stuff. He was one of
the skiers who had to wait until Saturday evening for his first
set. Here Keith makes his start off the back of the boat under the
eye of judge, Keith Green (left), crew, Amber Waddell, and driver
Richard Wood. |

Long
time Tekapo skier and former national champion, Reece Trotter was
another welcome contestant. Reece gave the event maximum effort
and was rewarded with second place in series 2 and 7th in the handicap.
Reece's best pass was 3 buoys on 14 metres at 55 kph. |

Another
who has grown up in the slalom course at Tekapo, Debbie Bain was
back attacking the event with a passion. Debbie was third in series
2 and 7th in the handicap. Her best pass was 2 buoys at 55 kph on
the 16 metre line. |

Although
no stranger to Tekapo it was great to see Amy James back competing.
Amy is kept busy these days studying and the skiing has been forced
to take a back seat. Amy is pictured here taking in the late afternoon
sun while waiting for her turn. She was placed 2nd in Series 2.
